iddah the waiting period, step by step

About this guide

Iddah (also spelled iddat or idda) is the waiting period a woman keeps after her husband’s death or a divorce. This free guide walks her through it, a step at a time, and shows where every answer comes from.

How we work

  • We report what the sources say. We never rule. Where the four schools agree, we say so; where they differ, all four are shown, one under another, in the order Ḥanafī, Mālikī, Shāfiʿī, Ḥanbalī, and none is put first as the answer.
  • Each point carries a number that leads to its source: the book, the page, a link, the day it was checked, and the passage itself.
  • A page is shown only when every source on it has been opened and read. Until then it says it is being written.
  • Every difference ends with: ask your imam, and a way to reach a qualified scholar if you can’t ask him.

Review

  • Every point on a ruling page comes from a source we opened ourselves: the book, volume and page, with the date it was checked. Anything we could not open is left out or marked unverified.
  • Where the four schools differ, all four are shown, with no school first and no winner.
  • Pages are published marked "pending scholarly review" until a reviewer signs them. The review line on each page comes from our records, not typed by hand, and any later edit sets it back to pending.
  • The scholar reviewer is Hamza Abdul-Tawwaab, a Ḥāfiẓ of the Qurʾān who leads Tarāwīḥ each Ramadan and teaches.
  • A woman reviewer, for the questions that need one, is still to be named. Until then, those pages say so.
  • US practical facts (work, benefits, insurance, legal aid) and every help line come from official pages, each with the date it was checked; help lines are re-checked before publishing and every quarter.
  • Not a fatwā. For your own situation, ask a qualified scholar.
  • Not legal, medical or financial advice. For a civil divorce, custody, immigration or benefits, talk to a licensed attorney in your state.
